A set of Welsh folk tunes recorded live in a house that formed part of the original Welsh Mission Compund in Mawkhar, Shillong. Performed on the Duitara by Gareth Bonello.

I thought I’d end the album with something simple and this track is exactly that. I was sitting in Streamlet Cottage in the old Welsh mission compound in Mawkhar, waiting for Lapdiang to arrive to rehearse. It was November and the weather was dry and sunny, with the morning light just beginning to stream through the window. I took out the Duitara and began to play some tunes, a few Khasi ones first and then a few Welsh ones, then one or two new ones. As I played, my thoughts kept turning over where I was and what it meant. I thought of the Welshmen and women that had likely stayed and lived in that room over the years. Through the walls I could hear the Khasi inhabitants in the adjacent houses shuffling on the wooden floors, talking or coughing. I realised I was playing to two audiences, neither of which I could see. One audience in the here and now and the and other long gone but somehow still present, like the mission itself. I turned to a familiar set of Welsh dances known colloquially as ‘Bob’s Set’ that I play on guitar. The set starts with ‘Erddigan y Pibydd Coch’ (The Red Piper’s Tune) before launching into ‘Tri a Chwech’ (Three and Six) before ending with my slightly wonky version of ‘Marwnad yr Heliwr (The Hunter’s Lament). There was a poignancy but also joy at playing those old Welsh tunes on a Khasi instrument in that empty old mission house, and in that moment, I felt like I was playing for everyone.
