In April 2019 I found myself back in Shillong on tour with the theatre production Performing Journeys. Benedict Hynñiewta and I were musical directors for the show, which featured the Welsh actor Rhys ap Trefor and Khasi actor Lapdiang Syiem in a collaborative piece directed by Lisa Lewis. Whilst in the city I took the opportunity to record some traditional Khasi percussion with Meban Lyngdoh to accompany an instrumental in the Shadwait rhythm. This instrumental is one of the first pieces I composed for Duitara, which I wrote as a sort of exercise to help me learn the rhythm. Meban always liked this one so I’m delighted that his brilliant percussion playing features on the track. We had played it together in a live session for Mark Swer’s show on Big FM Shillong in November 2018, but it was great to finally record a studio version. The track is a combination of the original tune and a Welsh folk song ‘Y Deryn Du’ adapted to fit the Khasi rhythm.
