Original composition by musician and instrument maker Risingbor Kurkalang from Laitkyrhong, Meghalaya. 'Mei Mariang' means 'Mother Nature'.

Rather fittingly, the first track on the album is a Duitara duet between master craftsman and musician Risingbor Kurkalang and myself. The Duitara is a traditional lute-like instrument with a close connection to indigenous Khasi culture, particularly through the strong oral tradition of folk songs and tales that are passed on around ka rympei (the hearth). Risingbor is a gifted craftsman and made both instruments on this track using the wood of the Jackfruit tree, U Dieng Slang. I’d booked Merliham Arrangements, a recording studio in Shillong in November 2018 and Risingbor turned up that morning with this new composition called ‘Mei Mariang’, which means ‘Mother Nature’ in Khasi. It sounded great playing in unison, with Risingbor picking the melody out on his smaller ‘soprano’ Duitara accompanied by my regular-sized one. Risingbor is one of those magical musicians that has a deep knowledge of tradition, but also the vision and musical gift to move it forward. I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to learn about Khasi music from him and his family.
