I wanted to include the distinctive sound and rhythm of Khasi percussion in concert with the piercing Tangmuri, a reeded woodwind instrument. This is the combination most usually found at festivals and dances. This recording was made in Pahambir Village in November 2018, a little after Jewel had sung Ka Sit Tula, as the night was setting in and people began to drift towards the warmth of their homes. The sound of frogs at the start of the track is a recording that I made in April the same year up in the hills above Shillong. Both are combined with the sound of Prit Makri delivering a masterclass on Muiñ, a bamboo instrument attached to a cord that produces a sound when placed on the lips and air is passed through it as the cord is pulled. Khasi folk music and instrumentation is intrinsically linked to the nature that surrounds the Khasi people. There are songs for agricultural tasks, sounds that mimic birds and even instruments to scare monkeys away from the rice fields. I suppose with this track I just wanted to represent a snippet of the sounds, made by people and nature that I heard during those visits to Pahambir in April and November 2018. I hope the listener will forgive my forgery, of combining three separate recordings to achieve this, but I believe the result will transport you for a moment to Pahambir Village in Ri Bhoi. I am extremely grateful to Rani, Jai, Prit and all the residents of the community in Pahambir for welcoming me and teaching me their culture. It would take a decade of reading to scratch the surface of what I learned just spending a few days there.
