An original composition by Desmond Sunn and Gareth Bonello. the meaning of 'Khampher' translates as something like 'it's alright' or 'it doesn't matter'. The song is about unity between the peoples of the Earth.

Desomond Sunn is something of a celebrity in Khasi society. A gifted songsmith and popular singer, he has written many songs that are adored by a lot of people if the frequency with which he is stopped in the streets of Shillong for selfies is anything to go by. Desmond is also a DJ for Red FM, a rock and pop radio station based in Shillong and it was in this capacity that I first met him in July 2017. Over the years I have performed several times on Desmond’s show and his enthusiasm and passion for Khasi music and culture was plain to see. We always talked about writing together, but somehow it never seemed to work out until he invited me to meet him with my guitar in November 2018 at a waterfall called Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (translation: ‘three step waterfall’) outside Shillong. I think the plan was to be inspired by the natural beauty of the falls as we wrote, but when I arrived there was no sign of Desmond. My phone had no signal, so there was no way Desmond could tell me he was running late. Two hours later he arrived on his motorcycle, flustered and apologetic, just as the sun was going down. There wasn’t much time, so we quickly set up in a pine wood next to the car park and Desmond played a new song he’d been writing. The temperature drops very rapidly after sundown in the mountains in November, so it wasn’t long before we were both freezing. I think the cold focussed our minds, because in a little under an hour we’d pulled the song apart, changed the chorus, added a middle eight, some Welsh verses and put it all back together again. A few days later we were in Merliham Arrangements, recording the track with Peter Dkhar. I’ll never forget the utterly gorgeous tone of Desmond’s vocal in that session and the fun we had layering the harmonies in the chorus. Kam Pher means something like ‘it’s alright’ in Khasi and has a simple but beautiful message of accepting our differences and loving your fellow human.
